Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Bonetongue, Steward of Dead Dreams (PFRPG)

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Bonetongue, Steward of Dead Dreams (PFRPG)

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Bonetongue, Steward of Dead Dreams (PFRPG) by Matt Banach and Justin Sluder is a role playing game supplement published by Rite Publishing for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a single NPC at three different CRs.

The supplement is available as an 18-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.95 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover, one the front matter, one the Open Game License and two are ads.

Bonetongue, Steward of Dead Dreams (PFRPG), as is usual for this series, opens with some details on the NPC, a goblin who gathers the dead fallen on the Coliseum Morpheuon and gives them a decent burial. Bonetongue is a white necromancer and isn’t happy about the constant bloodshed in the arena. And may eventually do something about it. Details are given on Dreamburning, Bonetongue’s graveyard, lore and using him in game.

Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Bonetongue, Steward of Dead Dreams (PFRPG)The three different versions follow, arranged in the book from high to low CR.

The CR 6 version is an eternal ogrekin goblin white necromancer 4.

The CR 10 version is an eternal ogrekin goblin white necromancer 10.

The CR 16 version is an eternal ogrekin goblin white necromancer 15.

Each of the three CR versions comes with three variant version, Death-Scavenger, Foul and Mystic.

There are also new feats, magic items and spells, all connected with the dead and undead in some way.

Templates follow. The Death-Scavenger feeds off the power when a soul leaves a body, Eternal creatures are, well, eternal, Foul creatures imbue vile substances and excrete toxic and foul fumes, the Mystic creature has supernatural power and an Ogrekin is of ogre descent.

The PDF is bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. Navigation is decent. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. Apart from the cover illustration, there are a couple of pieces of black and white stock art. Presentation is okay.

Most of the NPCs in this series are likely to be less than friendly, if not outright foes. Bonetongue is a pacifist. He can fight, but is far more likely to slip away. He’s also not evil, and having access to a white necromancer could be very useful. As long as characters don’t do something foolish like drive Bonetongue away, he has the chance to be a useful and friendly ally. One with a secret that may cause quite a lot of upheaval. Faces of the Tarnished Souk: Bonetongue, Steward of Dead Dreams (PFRPG) covers an interesting NPC and it can be found by clicking here.
