Extraction

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Extraction

Extraction by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 20 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

The opening paragraphs explain that the boss of a crime family in the Sonora sector – the adventure is set in the Frontiers of Space – has been arrested and convicted, and is now onboard a prison ship along with other violent and dangerous criminals, making escape difficult. The characters are approached by the second in command of the crime family who wants his boss broken out of prison.

ExtractionThe Patron gives stats on him

The Boss does likewise for him.

Complications are eight different things that could go wrong with the mission.

War Ship Delivering a Prisoner is a corvette that is bringing a new prisoner for incarceration, with said prisoner’s stats.

Random Encounters is a 2d6 list.

Security Bots are the five that are onboard the prison ship.

Prison Guard Contingent is a 3d6 table of guard stats.

Random Crew Members is a 1d6 table of crew stats.

Key to the Prison Ship covers the locations onboard.

Conditions for Success are what’s needed to accomplish the mission.

The final page of content is a map of the prison ship.

Escape in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and has enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. Bar the map and covers, there are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.

The aim of this adventure is for the characters to break into a heavily-guarded ship full of dangerous criminals and escape with one of them, on behalf of people of dubious integrity who may well stab them in the back, and if successful could end up sentenced to death on many different worlds. All told, that does not sound like an appealing mission to undertake, and characters would be well advised to leave well enough alone. Escape is a dangerous and potentially foolish adventure to undertake and can be found by clicking here.
