Expedition to the Crystal Caverns

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Expedition to the Crystal Caverns

Expedition to the Crystal Caverns by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 16 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three pages are the front matter and three are the Open Game License.

Expedition to the Crystal CavernsThe opening paragraphs explain that the characters are summoned to a megacorp of the Sonora sector – though not outright stated, the adventure is set in the Frontiers of Space – where they are asked to travel to a world and bring back a crystal that has a use in a new drive.

Patron gives brief details on the person doing the hiring.

Complications are problems that may arise with the mission; the patron is not withholding vital information for once, but there are still dangers.

Random Encounters and Occurrences in the Caverns has a 2d6 table of random events and creatures.

Key to the Crystal Caverns details the various locations in the area.

Mushrooms and Spores covers a primary hazard in the caverns; spores from a dangerous mushroom that can be found there.

Conditions for Success are quite simple; the characters must return with the crystals they have been sent for, and before another group doing the same does.

The final page of content is a map of the caverns.

Expedition to the Crystal Caverns in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, though comparatively short, they would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be mostly free of error. Bar the map and cover images, there are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.

This is a pretty simple adventure all told. The characters have to go to a location, explore it and find the items needed. Essentially, this is a science fiction dungeon crawl with fairly minimal science fiction elements. There are hazards and others seeking the same thing, but otherwise the adventure is pretty straightforward. Expedition to the Crystal Caverns can be found by clicking here.
