A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Earthmasters

Earthmasters is a role playing game supplement published by Columbia Games Inc. for use with the Hârn setting.

The supplement is available as a six-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.99 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale.

A sidebar on the first page explains that the supplement contains a mixture of “facts” combined with speculation, but it is up to the GM as to the precise truth for their campaign.

EarthmastersThe opening paragraphs explain that Earthmasters is the common name used for the first inhabitants of Hârn. They may be shape changers, or members of different species. It gives the date of when they were present, as well as suggestions that they may have controlled all of Kethira and could travel vast distances. There are still some sites and artefacts in existence, especially the Godstones. The Earthmasters disappeared thousands of years ago and dating is based on divination.

Earthmaster Artifacts covers the building material known as pseudostone, tools left behind, some specific artefacts, using them and their malfunctions.

Hypothesis and Speculation has various theories proposed regarding the Earthmasters.

The “Truth” is described as being the favourite version of the truth, though it may not be a GM’s precise truth and players should not gain knowledge of the ultimate secrets of the Earthmasters. This section gives the Earthmasters’ history, how they came to Kethira and what happened to them.

Earthmasters in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that these are not essential. Navigation is okay. The text on the first page is a single column with sidebar, and the remainder have a two-column layout, and it appeared to be free of errors. There are a few colour illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This supplement lacks any stats, making it system neutral background for Hârn. Its primary use is probably for the GM, as it contains background material characters are unlikely to uncover; or, given what’s stated in The “Truth”, unlikely to be able to comprehend. That section takes things in a bit of a different direction. Earthmasters is a useful background supplement for Hârn and it can be found by clicking here.
