A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Culpepper Junction

Culpepper Junction by Dave Woodrum and Dan Smith is a generic role playing game supplement published by Fishwife Games.

The supplement is available as a 30-page PDF for $3.99 from DriveThruRPG but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. One page is the front cover and one the front matter and Table of Contents.

Culpepper JunctionThe Introduction explains that this is a detailed Old West community that provides details, encounters and adventure hooks, which can be used with a historical or Weird West game.

Background Notes gives the history of the settlement from its founding to the present day.

Notable Factions gives some details on individuals, groups and organisations that have an influence in the area.

Street Locations gives details on the various major roads of the area. This, and the individual location descriptions, have connections to people and locations covered.

Numbered Map Locations details the various labelled buildings, including major NPCs, connections and what the location provides, if it isn’t purely residential.

Notable Visitors of Culpepper Junction has details of some NPCs who may visit, and why.

Town Rumors, Gossip and Small Talk is a d100 table of rumours connected to the town.

The final two pages have colour maps of Culpepper Junction, one labelled for the GM, the other blank.

Culpepper Junction in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. The Table of Contents covers the major sections. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column format and a number of minor errors were noticed. As well as the colour maps, there are a handful of black and white illustrations. Presentation is okay. There are also a number of blank spaces for Game Conversion Notes.

This is what it sets out to be; a detailed Old West town with a variety of locations and NPCs to encounter, together with plenty of rumours and connections for adventure hooks. Naturally, it is better suited for Old West than Weird West, as it’s easier adapting the former to the latter than vice versa, but the majority of encounters even in the Weird West will not be weird, so it is broadly useful. Culpepper Junction is a decent Old West town supplement and it can be found by clicking here.
