A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Creatures of the Wastelands: Habitats

Creatures of the Wastelands: Habitats is a role playing game supplement published by Skirmisher Publishing for use with Mutant Future. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 22-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter, one the Table of Contents, two are full page illustrations, one the Open Game License and one an ad.

Creatures of the Wastelands: HabitatsThe opening paragraphs explain that changes were wrought to the world during the cataclysm and new types of places have appeared as a result. These have since been colonised by both mutant and non-mutant lifeforms. 44 of these locations are described, along with up to four creatures each from three different books, the core book, Creatures of the Wastelands and Creatures of the Wastelands: Mutational Evolution, are listed as being possibly found there.

The types of habitats follow. Each is given a name and a brief description as to what they are like. After this, the potential creatures to encounter there are covered; in some cases, the habitats are too variable in nature for types to be given. In such cases, there will still be creatures found, but they should be determined on an individual basis. The habitats cover a wide range of strange types, including those that are themselves living creatures.

Creatures of the Wastelands: Habitats in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with the various sections linked. The Table of Contents is to a similar level of depth and is hyperlinked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be almost free of errors. There are a variety of stock illustrations, both colour and black and white, ranging from tweaked photos to clip art. Presentation is okay.

The supplement is an interesting one that can helpful for creating a world, as the different habitats could easily be dropped into different places, with already potential creatures to find there in many cases. The habitats are distinctive, too; crashed, possibly alien, starships are one of the most mundane. Creatures of the Wastelands: Habitats is an interesting little supplement and it can be found by clicking here.
