A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement College Of The Trick Or Treater (Bardic College)

College Of The Trick Or Treater (Bardic College) by Starshine is a role playing game supplement published by Wizards of the Coast through the DMs Guild Community Content Programme for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition.

The supplement is available as a four page PDF from DMs Guild for $2.99 but was purchased at a reduced price thanks to a special offer. One page is the front cover and one the front matter.

College Of The Trick Or Treater (Bardic College)This is, as it states, a new bardic college, and one with a Halloween theme, but one based around sweets and candy, not horror. The opening paragraphs explain that the aim of the college is to spread joy.

Many of the options available to the bard are not mechanical in nature; being motivated by eating candy or accepting candy from the bard instead of money are not mechanical effects. Bards may create candy using bardic inspiration and there’s a d12 list of candy that can be created this way, which do have mechanical effects. Other mechanical effects are to damage hostiles, combine candies into something that has the effects of all three and doing extra damage based on the number of candies eaten.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that these are not needed. Presentation is fine. The text maintains a two column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a couple of illustrations, as well as candy-themed paper. Presentation is okay.

Realistically, this is a light-hearted school that may not be suitable for other than a one-shot. There’s perhaps more fluff to describe the school than seen in others, but there are definitely better colleges around, especially as the mechanical effects are nothing spectacular; doing 1d8 or 2d6 extra damage at 14th level, for example, seems a little weak. At full price, this seems more than a little overpriced. College Of The Trick Or Treater (Bardic College) can be found by clicking here.
