A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Classic Dungeon Encounters, 50 Systemless Encounter Cards

Classic Dungeon Encounters, 50 Systemless Encounter Cards by Philip Reed is a generic role playing game supplement published by Philip Reed Games.

The supplement is available as a PDF from DriveThruRPG for $4.95, as cards for $19.95 or as both PDF and cards for $20.95. The PDF is the version reviewed although it was purchased at a reduced price during a sale.

Classic Dungeon Encounters, 50 Systemless Encounter CardsThere are two PDFs and a zip. The zip has 51 pngs, which consist of one card back and 50 cards.

The main PDF has 104 pages. One page is the front cover.

The next page has the front matter and gives a brief explanation as to what the cards consist of.

How to Use this Deck explains that the cards can be shuffled and one picked, but it can be a good idea looking through the deck first and remove any cards unsuited for the game currently being played.

“Making” Mechanics explains that the cards are pretty straightforward, but at points the text will require the GM to come up with a mechanical interpretation.

The remaining 100 pages are the cards, with 50 fronts and 50 backs. Most cards have an illustration appropriate to the card; all have a title and a brief description of the encounter.

The second PDF has seven pages. Six of the pages have nine cards to a page, or five in the case of the last one, and the seventh page has nine card backs. These will be suitable for home printing.

The PDFs lack bookmarks, but as they are intended to be printed out cards, navigation is okay. The text is a single column on each card and appeared to be free of errors. Most cards have their own illustration. Presentation is decent.

This is exactly what it looks like; a collection of 50 random dungeon encounters. These cover a range of classic types; monsters, traps and so on. None are that detailed and, naturally, none have any mechanics. They can serve as a source of inspiration to GMs to help flesh out a dungeon. Classic Dungeon Encounters, 50 Systemless Encounter Cards is a decent collection of random encounters for a dungeon and it can be found by clicking here.
