A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Cattle

Cattle by Jonathan Davidson and John Sgammato is a role playing game supplement published by Columbia Games Inc. for use with Hârn and HârnMaster. This is a bestiary article.

The supplement is available as a six-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.99 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale.

CattleThe first page of content explains that cattle are indigenous to Hârn and Lythia, and that both wild and domestic cattle can be found. It explains what Hârnic cattle need to remain productive, referencing the Land Quality Index, and what a typical manor herd consists of. A table lists the breeds, their colouring, range and size for male and female, and a sidebar explains the different breeds.

Domestic Bull describes this with various different sports they are used for, with stats in the sidebar.

Domestic Cow again describes what these are used for, which is meat and milk, with stats again.

Domestic Ox follows the same format; oxen are castrated bulls and are primarily used for ploughing, hauling and some other power demands, especially as they are cheaper than horses.

Aurochs is one of the wild breeds, and these are described with some fluff and stats, with the sidebar also having a map of Hârn showing their range.

Wisent is another wild breed, and again has a description, stats and range on a map of Hârn in the sidebar; they have a wider range than aurochs.

Cattle in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that these aren’t needed. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column with sidebar and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of black and white illustrations. Presentation is decent.

Just as with other bestiary articles, there is a substantial amount of fluff – in fact, it’s quite extensive, given that what’s covered is cattle – to go with the stats, meaning that this can be broadly used with other systems in Hârn and not just HârnMaster.
