Campaign System - Hero Kids Compatible

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Campaign System – Hero Kids Compatible

Campaign System – Hero Kids Compatible by Josiah Fiscus is a role playing game supplement published by Nailthorn Studios for use with Hero Kids. This supplement allows character advancement and adds other new options.

This is a 40 page PDF that is available from DriveThruRPG for $4.99 but was purchased at the reduced price of $2.50. The PDF comes in two versions, one without page backgrounds for easier printing. One page is the front cover.

Character Creation divides classes into three types, strength, dexterity and intelligence. Each type has three classes in it. For strength, these are the Brawler, Knight and Assassin. For dexterity, these are the Sniper, Ranger and Rogue. For intelligence, these are the Elementalist, Healer and Tinker. Each class has a brief sentence describing them.

Campaign System - Hero Kids CompatibleEach class then has a series of d6 tables where the player can roll for a special action, bonus ability, starting item and skill. This is followed by some specific items the class will have and instructions on assigning dice and other abilities.

Next is Character Progression, which covers assigning experience points. The normal minimum here is 1. A table lists experience awards for the official adventures at the time of writing. Levelling Up has a ten level experience table – at level 11, heroes are grown up and no longer kids. Scaling Difficulty has advice on scaling adventures for increasingly powerful characters. Level Rewards has two tables on rewards to choose from on levelling up.

Crafting has rules on crafting items from ingredients; stone, herbs, string, magic powder, ore and wood. There are components required to make the items in the core book. Advanced Crafting has more items, from the Equipment Cards supplement, divided into different skills.

Advanced Monsters has Encounter Values for monsters, all those in the Monster Compendium, so that how difficult they are to fight can be calculated. Monster Loot has items that could be found and Monster Locations has d100 tables of random encounters for different types of terrain.

Advanced Items introduces Gold Pieces and the price of different items.

Finally, there is a new character sheet.

Campaign System – Hero Kids Compatible in Review

The printer-friendly PDF is well bookmarked with the different sections linked. The other PDF has only the first and last pages linked. Navigation is therefore either very good or terrible, depending on the PDF. The text maintains a two column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

There are three character advancement systems for Hero Kids; this, Character Advancement – A Hero Kids Compatible Supplement for Levelling Characters and the recently released official Hero Kids – Fantasy Expansion – Hero Advancement Cards. Of the three systems, this is probably the most complex in some ways, but a lot of these are not related to the actual advancement, but the crafting, monster and treasure rules.

Even if one of the other systems is used for advancement, this supplement can still be worth picking up for the crafting rules, and perhaps the others. They add an extra element that is admittedly more complex, but could be fun to use. The character creation rules are admittedly the most complex, but are only really based on rolling a few dice. This does lead to a more complex character sheet though, rather than a character card. In terms of style, this is most similar to the other unofficial supplement. As mentioned, it does have far more content than character creation and levelling which can make it worth getting just for those other elements. Campaign System – Hero Kids Compatible is an interesting collection of new rules and it can be found by clicking here.
