Book of Friends and Foes: Ratfolk of the Ruins (PFRPG)

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Book of Friends and Foes: Ratfolk of the Ruins (PFRPG)

Book of Friends and Foes: Ratfolk of the Ruins (PFRPG) by E. Steev Ramsdell is a role playing game supplement published by Jon Brazer Enterprises for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a new race and several NPCs.

Book of Friends and Foes: Ratfolk of the Ruins (PFRPG)The supplement is available from DriveThruRPG for $2.95 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. It consists of a PDF and Hero Lab files. The PDF has 12 pages with two being the front and rear covers, one the front matter and Listing of NPCs and one an ad and Open Game License.

The Introduction talks about walking rats in geek culture and how to use the book, including that it uses material from the Advanced Player’s Guide and the Advanced Race Guide.

Ratfolk Racial Traits give the racial stats for the creatures.

Next are the various ratfolk. Each has stat blocks and then a description. Deginar Bloodclaw’s first duty is to protect the Bloodclaw clan. Nehm Brownear is an adventurer who will work for others. Scarlet Vendraz is a poisoner who usually steals from others. Skarn Delven is skilled at predicting the future. Finally, Tarlok Strevix is a sorcerer and head of the Strevix clan; stats are also given for warriors and elite warriors.

The PDF is well bookmarked with the various sections linked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of error. There are stock black and white and colour illustrations used for each NPC. Presentation is decent.

Though this does add a new race to Pathfinder, perhaps its main use is as a source of NPCs that characters could encounter. Each has, sometimes extensive, associated text, about where they are, what they do and how they could be encountered. Some are potential foes; others allies. In some cases, they could be both, converting from foe to ally, albeit paid ally. Book of Friends and Foes:  Ratfolk of the Ruins (PFRPG) is a decent collection of characters and it can be found by clicking here.
