An Unexpected Passenger

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement An Unexpected Passenger

An Unexpected Passenger by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 12 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

An Unexpected PassengerThe opening paragraphs explain that the characters are approached by a merchant in the Sonora sector – though not stated, the adventure is set in the Frontiers of Space – who wants a crate of lab equipment delivering to a specific world.

The Patron gives details on the person hiring the characters.

Complications are things that can go wrong, and as this is another mission where the patron is lying through their teeth, this adventure will not go right.

The Animal is the supposed laboratory equipment.

The Escape is what happens when the animal escapes confinement.

The Rampage is the damage it can do.

The Garan IV Star Port gives details on this.

The Authorities on Garan IV covers the trouble transporting the cargo can cause.

Mission Completion Objectives are how to complete it successfully; essentially, the characters can’t.

An Unexpected Passenger in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, though short, these would have been appreciated. Navigation could be better. The text follows a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. There are no illustrations bar the covers. Presentation is adequate.

The patron is, quite simply, an idiot. He wants to introduce an invasive species to an agricultural planet to cause damage to the farming, and he’s chosen to do this by introducing a single, large, creature to the planet. Yes, not even a mated pair. There would have been far more effective ways. In addition, his crate of “laboratory equipment” has air holes in it. Should the characters store it in an unpressurised cargo hold, the animal will promptly die, thus ending the adventure. There is no benefit for the characters to take on this job at all.
