Alien Terrain: Vargokka Coast

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Alien Terrain: Vargokka Coast

Alien Terrain: Vargokka Coast by Dave Woodrum is a generic role playing game supplement published by Fishwife Games.

The supplement is available as a four-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1.25 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. One page is the front cover.

Alien Terrain: Vargokka CoastPart of the first page is the front matter and this is followed by what is essentially a short piece of prose about landing on a planet. The rest of this page explains that this is a supplement providing a short hex map of a coastal region on an Earth like world. The hexes are 10 km across and 15 of these have points of interest. The GM can expand on these if desired. The locations are written to allow it to be as generic as possible, adding or deleting space fantasy elements as wished.

The next page is the main page, containing the essential information. About half of this is a labelled map of the region and the remainder briefly describes each location. The locations are given a name and a brief overview, ranging from a couple of sentences to a short paragraph.

The final page is a full-page hex map without the labels, which could be printed for players.

Alien Terrain: Vargokka Coast in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, at this length, doesn’t need them. The text follows a single column format and appeared to be free of error. The sole illustration is the colour map. Presentation is decent.

As it states in the supplement, a GM could add more locations, events and encounters. Though it’s useful having something that fits on a page, it does feel it could have been better if it was a bit longer, with some more fleshing out (later supplements are longer; these may have been expanded). It would also be interesting to see the locations expanded more in separate supplements. Alien Terrain: Vargokka Coast is a short, cheap and useful science fiction supplement and it can be found by clicking here.
