Adventures in Bayhaven - Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Adventures in Bayhaven – Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy

Adventures in Bayhaven – Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy by Brian Benoit is a role playing game supplement published by Roving Band of Misfits Press for use with the Hero Kids system. This is a Christmas adventure in the publisher’s Bayhaven setting.

This is an eighteen page PDF which is available from RPGNow for $1.99 but was purchased at the reduced price of $1 as part of the Adventures in Bayhaven Ultimate Bundle. One page of the supplement is the front cover and one the front matter.

Adventures in Bayhaven - Dance of the Sugar Plum FairyThe first page is a standard one covering what is needed to play the adventure, what is useful to play and how to use the adventure. There is also information on the optional Time Units rule, but this can be disregarded as time units are not used in this adventure. The next page gives the location background, adventure background and adventure synopsis.

The first encounter is the introductory one covering the arrival of the Sugar Plum Fairy, a mischief-causing spirit who arrives some Christmases, and her entry into the local bakery.

Next are the three main encounters, all combat in this adventure. The first is to save the bakery owner from gingerbread men animated by the fairy, the next to defeat Christmas trees also animated by her and the final main encounter is against the Sugar Plum Fairy herself, and probably gingerbread men and animated Christmas trees. Each encounter can be scaled depending on how many heroes there are.

The conclusion wraps things up, gives details on the Sugar Plum Fairy and dispenses treasure.

The next pages have a map of Bayhaven with the encounter locations marked, two cards for the Christmas-themed treasure, three monster cards with minis, and three battlemaps which appear to have been drawn in coloured pencil.

Adventures in Bayhaven – Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, although it is short, they would have been useful. Navigation is below average. The text maintains a two column format and no errors were noticed. The supplement doesn’t really have illustrations as such, but there are the battlemaps, colour monster cards, minis and items. Presentation is good.

This is an unusual adventure for the publisher as every main encounter is a combat one. It is intended to be a short holiday adventure though, and it does work quite well. There are sidebars on NPCs encountered, who are also detailed in the Bayhaven book, and there is an optional use of a Bayhaven apprenticeship in one encounter.

Adventures in Bayhaven – Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is a nice little Christmas adventure that can be found by clicking here.
