Adventures in Bayhaven - A Simple Errand

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Adventures in Bayhaven – A Simple Errand

Adventures in Bayhaven – A Simple Errand by Brian Benoit is a role playing game supplement published by Roving Band of Misfits Press for use with the Hero Kids system. This is an adventure set in the publisher’s town of Bayhaven.

This is a 17 page PDF which is available from RPGNow for $2.99 but which was purchased at the reduced price of $1.50 as part of the Adventures in Bayhaven Ultimate Bundle. One page is the front cover and one the front matter.

The first page is a standard one for this series of adventures, detailing what is needed to play the adventure, what is useful, an overview of Time Units, an optional rule for the Bayhaven setting by which players can fail or not completely succeed at an adventure if they run out of time, and how to use the adventure.

Adventures in Bayhaven - A Simple ErrandThe next page gives background for Bayhaven and the adventure, as well as a synopsis of the adventure and possible expansions.

The adventure itself consists of six encounters, an opening encounter setting up the adventure and a closing one finishing it, with four main encounters in between. The characters are asked to get an item, a potion, from a shop for their class at the academy. The opening encounter features a riddle, with two difficulties, and the shop owner needs an ingredient for the potion and so sends them to another place.

The next encounter involves spotting a person on a picture, and he, too, wants something. It continues like this, with the next shop owner needing something, and the next and the next. Two of the encounters feature combats and one involves describing a needed item.

The following all take up a page. There are two colour battlemaps, which appear to be hand drawn in coloured pencil, for the combat encounters, a full colour picture for the encounter where players have to spot the individual they need to speak to, a map of Bayhaven with the locations marked and, finally, a page with two new monsters, with monster cards and minis.

Adventures in Bayhaven – A Simple Errand in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, although it isn’t long, they would have been appreciated. Navigation is not brilliant. The text maintains a two column format and no errors were noticed. There is really only one illustration, with anything else being reduced versions of the various battlemaps and handouts. Presentation is pretty good.

This is a pretty classic find an item story. Every individual needs something in exchange for the item needed from them; characters have to go from one to the next getting what’s needed, and then go back down the chain. There are a mix of encounter types; two combat, a riddle, a spot the individual and a remember the description. This makes a nice amount of variation for the adventure.

Adventures in Bayhaven – A Simple Errand is an interesting, and varied, adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
