Advanced Options: More Cavalier Orders by Marc Radle and Owen K.C. Stephens is a role playing game supplement published by Rogue Genius Games (originally Super Genius Games) for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.
The supplement is available as an 11 page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $3.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Around two thirds of a page is the cover illustration and one the Open Game License and Credits.
The opening paragraphs discuss the concept of cavalier orders introduced in the Advanced Players’ Guide, much of which is copied from Advanced Options: Cavaliers’ Orders, dropping the new orders into a campaign and a brief overview of the seven.
The Order of the Bow devotes itself to archery. It gets bonuses for using a bow, dodging whilst mounted and the ability to end a charge with a ranged attack.
The Order of the Citadel devotes itself to teamwork, bravery and valour. It gains the ability to issue commands in battle, benefiting others, and is harder to knock over or down.
The Order of the Raven are enforcers of a specific lord. They gain bonuses to intimidate, darkvision and the ability to cast spells related to darkness.
The Order of the Shroud is dedicated to fighting undead. They gain undead as a favoured enemy, the ability to smite them and the ability to challenge them.
The Order of the Trident is an aquatic order dedicated to the sea. They gain abilities with the trident and for working together with their mount; the mounts are various aquatic creatures that are used differently to land animals.
The Order of the Unicorn are protectors of nature. They gain wild empathy, a unicorn mount and an ability to provoke attacks of opportunity against evil creatures.
The Order of the Wolf serve a specific tribe or clan. They can use allies to confuse foes, improved ability to operate without support and to fight as one with their mount. Dire wolf mounts are an option.
There are also several new feats.
Advanced Options: More Cavalier Orders in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and has enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is poor. The text follows Super Genius’ old three column landscape layout that is designed to be easier to read on electronic devices. It is less convenient on small screens though and not really ideal for printing. There is a single colour illustration other than the cover, that looks to be stock, and a black and white emblem for each order, which may be custom. Presentation is decent.
As previously stated, a problem with supplements like this is to make the, effectively, organisations interesting, yet still easy enough to drop into most settings, whether this be through fluff that can be ignored or modified or by making them generic. Which too easily means bland. This supplement succeeds better than its predecessor in making the orders interesting. They are still generic and still easy to drop into settings, but lack the blandness of those in the prior supplement, which is a definite plus. Advanced Options: More Cavalier Orders is a better selection of cavalier orders and can be found by clicking here.
