A Rumble in the Jungle

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement A Rumble in the Jungle

A Rumble in the Jungle by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 26 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three are the front matter and three the Open Game License.

The opening paragraphs explain that the CEO of a megacorp came across information that one of the sector’s – the adventure is set in the Frontiers of Space, though this isn’t explicitly stated – smaller corporations had discovered a cure for a deadly disease. The CEO wants the characters to go to the development lab, get the drug and destroy the lab.

A Rumble in the JungleComplications are the problems that can arise. One of the biggest is that the characters are not the only people after the drug. Another being that, as is pretty typical, the patron isn’t being completely honest. The drug isn’t quite what’s stated either.

Team Arrivals has a 2d6 table for determining when the competing retrieval teams will arrive.

The next section gives details on the device given to destroy the lab.

Legal Complications has different problems that can arise from this less than legal mission.

Accidental Release has problems that can be caused with a firefight in a lab working on a disease.

Creatures of the Jungle has three new monsters.

The Other Teams explains that characters will hear if others have arrived first.

Random Encounters in the Jungle could be the new monsters or they could be competitors.

Key to the Adventure covers the lab’s layout, with NPC stats.

The Assault Teams has stats for the other teams.

Random Soldiers and Guards has stats for these.

Random Non-Military Personnel has stats for non-combatants.

Scientists has more stats.

Game Master Notes has some details on running the adventure.

Conditions for Success is what the characters need to do to succeed.

Finally, there is a map of the lab.

A Rumble in the Jungle in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and has enough sections that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. There are no illustrations, bar the covers and the map; the latter doesn’t come in a player friendly version. Presentation could be better.

This adventure isn’t as long as it might initially look; a good chunk of it is taken up by the various NPC stats. It’s also a difficult one to complete successfully, given the sheer number of people with guns that could be roaming around id multiple assault teams arrive close to each other. This does have the benefit that the characters could let opposing forces wipe each other out, but that is still not a perfect solution. Truthfully, this is not a good mission to accept, despite the rather significant payoff; there are too many problems that characters could encounter as the result of even a successful operation.
