1-6 Oozes in the Dark

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement 1-6 Oozes in the Dark

1-6 Oozes in the Dark by Steve Wright is a role playing game supplement published by Deus Ex Minima for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a single encounter aimed at level 2 characters.

The supplement is available as a 4-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $3 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. As well as the main PDF, there are two map PDFs, each a single page, one black and white printer friendly, the other colour.

1-6 Oozes in the DarkOf the four pages, one is the front cover and the Open Game License and one is a map of the cave, but the supplement is not laid out in such a way. It is intended to be printed out and made into a booklet and doesn’t come in a version that is designed to be read digitally. So, if read digitally, all the pages are disordered.

The first true page of content, splitting the pages in two, has a number of adventure hooks, which is basically just to get characters to go into a cave with grey oozes living there. There are descriptions of what can be seen.

The next page has some details on scaling the encounter, there are trackers for the initiative order and the oozes’ hit points, tactics, victory and what happens if things go poorly.

This is followed by a d6 table of treasure, a d12 table of NPC names and brief descriptions of three locals.

The final page of content has a colour hex map, a d10 table of encounters and three brief locations.

1-6 Oozes in the Dark in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, given its design, these are not needed. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are some stock images. Presentation is okay.

As stated, this supplement is intended to be printed out as a small ‘zine and used in such a way. It is not designed to be read as a PDF nor does it come with an alternative for doing so, which limits its usability. As is, this is a simple encounter that can be used – though with more difficulty in PDF format – when such is needed. 1-6 Oozes in the Dark is a decent little encounter, but a PDF that didn’t have to be printed out would have been a great help, and it can be found by clicking here.
