Shadow of the Eagle by Jordan Falcon is a role playing game supplement published by Chaosium Inc. through the Miskatonic Repository Community Content Programme for use with Call of Cthulhu, the horror role playing game based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
The supplement is available as a seven-page PDF for free from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover and one the front matter.
The opening paragraph explains that this is a short and linear adventure and offers the opportunity to have other adventures set during the Vietnam War.
The Introduction explains that it is 1968 and the adventure is set ten miles west of Saigon. The characters are in the NLF, better known as the Viet Cong, and get called up to set some traps.
The Mission explains that they are at a cave intended to be set as a trap when an American helicopter appears and kills their leader. The only safe place is inside the cave where there are fungal strands.
Following this are the sections that make up the actual adventure. During it, the characters discover Mi-go, Tcho-Tcho and evidence that the Americans have been summoning the Mi-go.
Continuing explains that this can be used as a launching point for further adventures.
Appendices has some various details on the Viet Cong, who referred to themselves as the National Liberation Front, their tunnels and the local beliefs regarding unity. There are also tables of Vietnamese names and encounters, as well as stat blocks for monsters and NPCs.
Shadow of the Eagle in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that these are not needed though they would have been appreciated. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and some minor errors were noticed. There are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.
This is, as it states, a short adventure with a very linear progression; go from one point to the next to the next and have a final confrontation. It could be used as a launch point for a Vietnam War-era campaign, though the Keeper will need to do a lot of work in order to develop such.
