Urban Dressing: The Watch

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Urban Dressing: The Watch

Urban Dressing: The Watch by Josh Vogt is a role playing game supplement published by Raging Swan Press for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 15-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.45 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, two the front matter, Contents and Stat Blocks by CR and one is the Open Game License. The PDF comes in two versions, one designed for print and high-end devices, the other for mobile and low-end devices.

Urban Dressing: The WatchThis supplement is intended to help flesh out a city’s watch.

Table A: Rank and File is a d100 table with 36 results. Each names a member of the watch, gives their alignment, race, class and level and a brief description of them.

Table B: Informers and Watchers is another d100 table, this time with 15 results. These are brief descriptions of informants, again giving their name, alignment, race, class and level with a brief description.

Table C: Sergeants & Captains & Specialists is another d100 table, with 23 results, covering higher-ranking members of the watch. Again, their name, alignment, race, class and level with a brief description are given.

Table D: Experts & Specialists is another d100 table, this time covering those with specialised skills and with 17 results. Once again, name, alignment, race, class and level with a brief description are given.

Watch Patrols has numbers for several different patrols and stats for their members.

Table E: Hooks, Complications and Opportunities is a d100 table with 50 results of potential problems the watch might have to deal with, or which the characters could help them with.

Urban Dressing: The Watch in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. The Contents is not quite as thorough and is hyperlinked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be almost free of errors. There are a number of pieces of black and white stock art, up to full page in size. Presentation is decent.

The supplement is a good collection of lists that can be used to flesh out a city watch, though perhaps referring to specific stats from the NPC Codex and GameMastery Guide rather than giving class and level would have been helpful. There are probably a few things that would need adding to make this supplement comprehensively useful, such as watch gear, but it is perfectly serviceable by itself.
