The Palace of Al Karam

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Palace of Al Karam

The Palace of Al Karam by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with OSRIC. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 24 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and four the Open Game License.

The Palace of Al KaramThe opening paragraphs explain that a palace has literally appeared overnight, said to be the property of Al Karam, a prince of the Jural Empire. The palace is in the noble quarter, though no-one has seen inside it yet; the adventurers, however, have been invited for dinner.

Dungeon Master Notes explains that this is an adventure for 6-8 characters of levels 9-12. It also covers some secrets about the palace and Al Karam, and explains where the adventure is located in the author’s setting, a brief description of the Jural Empire, and that it could easily be placed elsewhere.

Random Encounters has some random encounters for the palace grounds.

Key to the Palace of Al Karam covers the locations in the palace, which include various hazards, treasure and clues as to what the palace and occupants really are.

Dungeon Master Note covers what to do if the characters twig to what’s going on and has stats for the main enemies.

New Magical Items and Artifacts has new ones of these.

The final page of content is a map.

The Palace of Al Karam in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. There is a single colour full page stock illustration, as well as the covers and map. Presentation is okay.

As mentioned, the adventure is easy enough to drop into most settings with some tweaks. The adventure itself is also potentially dangerous, and the sooner that the characters figure out the secrets, the better it will go for them. The Palace of Al Karam can be found by clicking here.
