The Library of Thuvior the White

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Library of Thuvior the White

The Library of Thuvior the White by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with OSRIC. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 19 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

The Library of Thuvior the WhiteThe opening paragraphs explain that fantasy cities are made up of different places and that having ones to drop in are useful. This one is a library, named after its benefactor, a member of the local wizards’ council who shared a collection of his books, and is a good place to find books on all kinds of topics, but not spellbooks, as well as those who would use such a place.

Encounters in the Library has various different encounters.

Key to the Library covers the various locations.

Guardians of the Library explains that there are invisible stalkers patrolling it.

Keepers of the Library explain that unseen servants keep everything tidy.

Staff of the Library explains that apprentices, 0 level magic users or illusionists, as well as some more powerful spellusers, are the living staff.

The Council of Wizards has stats for the various members of the council, including Thuvior the White.

Use of the Library looks at how it can be used for spell research, magic item research and other kinds of research, without using a sage, and the chances of success for the latter.

Adventure Hooks has a number of different adventure hooks.

The Collection has details on some of the more noteworthy books.

New Magic Items has a couple of new items.

Patrons of the Library has a d20 list of possible users, giving their name, class or profession and some notes about them.

The final page of content has a map of the library.

The Library of Thuvior the White in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. Bar the map and covers, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This is another supplement that can be used to flesh out a fantasy city; the city would have to be a high magic one, however, as the titular Thuvior is a level 21 magic user and there’s another archmage on the council, too. This is powerful even for OSRIC and similar standards, and perhaps overpowered for some settings. There are also a few references to the author’s setting in The Collection, which will need tweaking. Other than that, this is a useful supplement. The Library of Thuvior the White can be found by clicking here.
