The Cult of the Colour Out of Space

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Cult of the Colour Out of Space

The Cult of the Colour Out of Space by Robert Gresham, Angel “ARMR” Miranda and Rodney Sloan is a role playing game supplement published by Wayward Rogues Publishing for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as an 18-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $0.99. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter and Contents and two the Open Game License.

The Cult of the Colour Out of SpaceThe opening paragraphs give an overview of the lair of the Glowing God and how it influences the area.

History of the Cult covers the history, starting with the korred and how they summoned up a sentient mold which they tried to use to drive off settlers but which turned on the korred, enslaving them and turning them on the human settlers. A comet (actually, a meteorite by the description) than impacted, and dwarves investigated, only to be mostly slaughtered by the Glowing God that had come with the comet. This tale brought a dragon looking for what the dwarves found, only to fall under the influence herself. It then looks at the current state of things and the fact that the rumours have drawn others to the area.

Stats and details are then given for the various creatures that are part of the cult, often unwillingly originally, including a new spell and two new magic items, one a cursed tome that has strange effects. They are also given for the Glowing God itself, a Colour Out of Space, along with details on its physiology, psychology, what happens when fighting it and knowledge that can be learned. There’s also a new occultist archetype.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. The Contents covers what may be the major sections. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be mostly free of errors. There are a number of colour illustrations. Presentation is decent.

This cult is located in the Shattered Skies setting, not that far from the town of Brighton, but it’s also a self-contained cult that exists in only one area. This makes it easy enough to drop into any setting in a suitable location; some of the history and details will need to be changed, but this shouldn’t be too difficult.
