The Crypt of Tabor

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Crypt of Tabor

The Crypt of Tabor by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with OSRIC. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is an adventure for 1st level characters.

The Crypt of TaborThe supplement is available as a 43 page Pay What You want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

Game Master Notes explains that the adventure is intended for 4-7 1st level characters at the beginning of a campaign and that it needs a good mix of characters, with one of a cleric, thief, fighter and magic-user, and an explanation as to why these are needed and that a balanced party is essential for survival. It explains that it begins in a village which could be sited in your own setting and that there have been rumours of activity in the cemetery where the crypt of Tabor, a local of renown who died on an adventure and was buried there, has been vandalised. The villagers ask the characters investigate. Not everything is as it seems.

Background for the Players gives what they will be told and there is a d20 list or rumours, marked whether they are true or false.

Random Encounters has monsters and things to encounter in the graveyard.

Key to Crypt of Tabor takes up the majority of the supplement and covers the locations in the crypt, a three-level dungeon filled with traps, puzzles and undead.

New Magical Items has three new items.

Player Handout A has a couple of diary extracts.

The final three pages of content have three colour maps of the levels of the dungeon.

The Crypt of Tabor in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is poor. The text maintains a two-column format and some minor errors were noticed. There are a variety of colour and black and white pieces of stock art, varying a lot in their styles, making them rather inconsistent. Presentation is okay.

This may be an adventure for 1st level characters, but it’s also a pretty dangerous one. There are a lot of monsters and dangers in the dungeon, and characters may rapidly burn through their resources. In addition, there are a number of puzzles that need solving, or are optional, and puzzles are a difficult thing to handle as they can easily bring a game to a crashing halt if the players are not good at solving them. The Crypt of Tabor is a dangerous adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
