Secret Societies of Vathak: The Final Phase

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Secret Societies of Vathak: The Final Phase

Secret Societies of Vathak: The Final Phase by Jeffrey Swank is a role playing game supplement published by Fat Goblin Games for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a supplement for the Shadows over Vathak setting.

The supplement is available as an 11-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $3.41 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover, one the front matter, one the Contents and one the Open Game License.

Secret Societies of Vathak: The Final PhaseThe first page has some fluff taken from the diary of the person who inspired the secret society.

The Introduction explains that the Final Phase are an organisation of religious zealots. They worship the inhabitants of the unknowable void in the hopes of earning salvation. They are dedicated to the works and philosophy of Maurice Lazard and members come from all walks of life though the upper echelons come from high society and power. A sidebar explains that the group ties in with the adventure Silhouette of a Shadow, though that isn’t required to use it.

Structure starts by covering the society’s central location. It then looks at the leadership, with the main leader, three senior cultists who report to her and three other members of note. Its purpose is to survive, and they believe their way is the only way to survive the awakening of the Great Old Ones. How cultists are initiated, and they are usually from the wealthy and politically influential, is looked at, and how cultists are inducted further, with their oath.

The Final Phase Items has a couple of magic items used by the society,

Adventure Hooks has three adventure hooks.

Secret Societies of Vathak: The Final Phase in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with the major sections and subsections are linked. The Contents is to a similar level of depth and is hyperlinked. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There is a single colour illustration. Presentation is okay.

Though this is a secret society for the Shadows over Vathak setting, most of it will be easy to drop into another setting with only a few comparatively minor changes. It wouldn’t even need to be a setting where Great Old Ones exist; any suitable powers could be used. The society isn’t covered in a huge amount of detail, but enough that it could be used as a starting point. Secret Societies of Vathak: The Final Phase can be found by clicking here.
