A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Rryonn

Rryonn by choya is a role playing game supplement published by Chaosium Inc. through the Miskatonic Repository Community Content Programme for use with Call of Cthulhu, the horror role playing game based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft.

The supplement is available as an eight page Pay What You want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover and one the front matter.

Rryonn explains that this is a comedy-horror room escape that should take maybe 30 minutes, with at least one player and an NPC and preferably more. It is intended to take an object that no-one finds scary and make it scary to someone who has never seen one, in this case a tangerine. A note explains that the scenario is deeply Korean in nature, based on the cultural relationship with tangerines, the Korean alphabet and Korean humour. Rather than rewriting it, it explains how this works and suggests using something appropriate in another culture. The premise explains this uses Rryonn Knowledge, rather than Cthulhu Mythos, illogical SAN checks are made a lot and characters should have no knowledge of tangerines or other citrus fruits.

Scenario has the opening scene with has the characters in an amber coloured room with no exits and a box, with a sign saying they must eat what’s inside in order to escape. From this point the scenario is said to be open-ended. The characters can inspect the box and the rryonn, eventually eating it, with the descriptions being completely accurate and completely misleading. Rryonn Knowledge is covered as well as madness effects, and finally the ending. There is some recommended background music and author’s notes on tangerines, Korean culture and one session.

The PDF is thoroughly bookmarked with the various sections linked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This is best done as a one-shot, though it could be inserted as a breather interlude in a campaign. It is, as noted, a not exactly sensible adventure, but it isn’t intended to be. Rryonn can be found by clicking here.
