Rose Fortress by Victor Dimitroff is a role playing game supplement published by Free League Publishing through the Free League Workshop Community Content Programme for use with Forbidden Lands.
The supplement it available as a 17 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover and one the front matter.
The Background explains that Basinhall was built as a small village intended to house the workers building the Rose Fortress, but when the Blood Mist fell, everyone was trapped and this became their home. The noble family building the fortress originally interacted well with the villagers, but a corrupting influence resulted in things being more divided, essentially ending up with two villages.
Getting There explains that this is meant to be an expansion of The Horse encounter in the Gamemaster’s Guide, though it’s not necessary to have that first. A sidebar has additional options for that encounter.
Legend has the legend of the construction of the fortress.
Locations covers the various important locations at the site. Each is given a fluff description, a more detailed description and creatures and treasure as appropriate. There are also maps of the village and the fortress. The Rose Fortress itself has the locations inside it described separately, in the same manner. There is also another area covered with its own map.
Monsters and NPCs describes and stats the various important NPCs and creatures from the locations. A sidebar describes a magic item. Less important NPCs are just covered in a table, with name, profession, stats and possessions.
Events is a number of events that can take place at the adventure site.
Rose Fortress in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be mostly free of errors. Bar the maps, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.
This supplement covers a small adventure site, but one with a number of different adventure hooks that can be used to generate several adventures for characters visiting it. It’s a self-contained site, so can easily be dropped in anywhere, and doesn’t really need to be that close to the site of the encounter The Horse.
