Robots of the Frontiers of Space by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.
The supplement is available as a 26 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.
The opening paragraphs explain that the people of the Sonora Sector – this is set in the Frontiers of Space – use robots for many purposes.
Types of Robots Used in the Sonora Sector is the bulk of the supplement. Each bot is given a name, Tech Level, cost, stats, traits and weapons, though weapons are often not weapons, for robots that lack a traditional combat purpose. There is also a description of what the different robot types are used for and where they can be found. The robots are accounting, agro/farmer, archaeological, bailiff, bartender, biological warfare, cat/dog, chauffeur, chemical warfare, construction, customer service, demolition, engineering, factory, food processing, hazardous environment, hazardous waste, janitorial, judicial, lawyer, mechanic, mining, patrol, patrol drone, police, prison guard, prosecutor, prospecting, public defender, rancher, sales, sanitation, security, strip mining, survey, taxi, waiter and war.
Robot Variations explains that robots typically come with options.
Use of Robots in the Sonora Sector explains that despite treaties limiting the use of robots in warfare, they are still used in conflicts.
Summary explains that robots alleviate military and civilian labour problems.
Robots of the Frontiers of Space in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a single column format and some errors were noticed, some minor but others duplicated text from one robot onto another. There are some colour stock images up to full page in size, as well as the covers. Presentation is okay.
The robots in this supplement are not really limited to the Sonora Sector; they are general robots that could easily be used in other settings. They also, as can be seen, fulfil a wide range of roles, some that might be otherwise filled by sentients, and some that would be dangerous for living creatures to do. Robots of the Frontiers of Space is a decent little supplement and it can be found by clicking here.
