Riyal's Research: Haunts

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Riyal’s Research: Haunts

Riyal’s Research: Haunts by Dale C McCoy Jr is a role playing game supplement published by Jon Brazer Enterprises for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

Riyal's Research: HauntsThis is an eight-page PDF that is available from DriveThruRPG for $2 but was purchased at a greatly reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover, one the front matter and Open Game License and one page is an ad.

The first page is Riyal’s Journal, which is some in-character prose on the subject of haunts, what they are, how they form, how they differ from traps and what weaknesses they have.

Next are the haunts, which range from CR1 to CR15, and there are 24 haunts in total. The haunts cover a range of types and are generally of more interesting kinds. Most of them should be easy enough to drop into a campaign or a location, although a couple refer to battles which might be trickier, but still not impossible. As is fairly common with haunts, some of the methods of destroying them are so complicated and hard to do that they are essentially impossible.

Riyal’s Research: Haunts in Review

The PDF is very well bookmarked, given its length, with each CR linked as well as each individual haunt. Navigation is excellent. The text maintains a two-column black and white format and appeared to be almost free of errors. There are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.

The introductory journal is a nice piece of fluff, and it could perhaps even be given to players as a handout. The haunts cover a nice range, with a lot of different CR levels, and there are a lot of them for the price of the supplement. Riyal’s Research: Haunts is a nice collection of generally useful haunts and it can be found by clicking here.
