Malcon’s Tome of Magic by Jospeh Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with OSRIC. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.
The supplement is available as a 61 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.
The Preface explains that this was written by the Demon Lich Malcon the Firebringer, a powerful being from the author’s setting. It also explains that if there are any magic items with similarities to those in similar works, this is a coincidence.
Game Master Notes explains the abbreviations used and other standards used in the item descriptions.
Author’s Note is written from the point of view of Malcon and it explains only the best items are listed.
Magical Items of Zanzia covers the items themselves. These cover the categories of potions, scrolls, rings, rods, staves, wands, miscellaneous items, weapons, shields, armour and artefacts. Those who have read the OSRIC supplements from the publisher that were released before this will notice familiar items.
A Final Word From Malcon explains that contributions are gratefully received.
Malcon’s Tome of Magic in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and given the length and the number of different sections these would have been really useful. Navigation is poor. The text maintains a two-column format and some minor errors were noticed. There are a variety of colour and black and white illustrations. Presentation is okay.
This is what it sets out to be; a supplement with a lot of new magic items suitable for OSRIC. Some, like artefacts, may have connections to the author’s setting, but these can be tweaked. Overall, this is a useful supplement with many new magic items. Malcon’s Tome of Magic can be found by clicking here.
