Frost Giant Pirates of the Icy Heart

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Frost Giant Pirates of the Icy Heart

Frost Giant Pirates of the Icy Heart by Ben Kent is a role playing game supplement published by Raging Swan Press for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, and as such is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

Frost Giant Pirates of the Icy HeartThe supplement is available as a 24-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $3.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one is an ad, two the front matter, one the Contents, Stat Blocks by CR and Foreword and one the Open Game License. The PDF comes in two versions, one intended for print and high-end devices, one intended for low-end and mobile.

Frost Giant Pirates of the Icy Heart starts by explaining that the Icy Heart is a mobile iceberg that is home to the frost giants, a dragon and her brood and pet.

Origins then explains how Lady Krath had the idea of turning an iceberg into a pirate ship and contacted the frost giant jarl and the dragon and it is she that ensures that the disparate parts of the enterprise do not turn on each other as they increase her wealth and her husband’s political power.

Daily Life looks at what the different inhabitants do on a daily basis, especially as an iceberg requires less maintenance than a ship.

In Your Campaign is a sidebar suggesting how to use the supplement in other settings.

Raiding and Piracy explains they carry out three types of raids; storming villages, raiding other vessels and destroying other vessels.

The Icy Heart briefly describes the iceberg itself. Sidebars cover lore, cold hazards, icy terrain and defeating the giants.

Encounters with the Icy Heart describes various encounters.

New Feats has three new feats.

New Spells has a new spell in normal and greater forms and a sidebar looks at changing the effects of the new spell.

New Equipment has crampons.

Jarl Icehammer’s Camp describes this and has stats for giants.

Flashfreeze’s Brood covers the younger dragons and a sidebar looks at customising them.

Persona: Lady Antonia Krath covers her.

Persona: Flashfreeze covers the dragon.

Persona: Jarl Jarok Icehammer covers the giants’ leader.

Persona: Lozondur covers the dragon’s pet.

Persona: Lord Ysrich Krath covers Lady Krath’s husband.

Reading Stat Blocks is a standard page for the publisher explaining how to use these.

Frost Giant Pirates of the Icy Heart in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with everything but the sidebars and stat blocks linked. The Contents is less thorough and is hyperlinked. Stat Blocks by CR lists these. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be mostly free of errors. There are a few black and white illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This provides a useful group of pirates who could be dropped into a campaign easily enough, although admittedly only in cold regions, given their nature. The pirates themselves are a different and assorted bunch, and Lady Krath’s manipulations could be used to have a greater influence on the campaign. Frost Giant Pirates of the Icy Heart is an interesting supplement and it can be found by clicking here.
