Forgotten Shrine 01

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Forgotten Shrine 01

Forgotten Shrine 01 by David Garrett is a role playing game supplement published by Amalara Game Studio for use with Shadowdark.

The supplement is available as a 13 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover and one the Contents and Credits. There is also a zip file containing 13 png NPC portraits as well as the same 13 pngs as circular VTT tokens.

Forgotten Shrine 01The first page of content has a map of the shrine.

Getting Started explains that in a world where the dead can get up and walk around, funeral practices are taken seriously. In the past, bodies were taken to the care of mushroomfolk priests, though now the dead are just cremated. The shrine is one such place used in the past which now houses ettercaps and goblins as well as the spirits of mushroomfolk priests. Details are given on approaching the shrine, running the puzzles, how the inhabitants react to intruders and move around and what happens if the intruders leave then come back.

Goblins has details on the goblin faction in the dungeon.

Ettercaps has details on this faction.

Spirits has details on the spirits of the dead mushroom priests.

Level 1 – Outer Shrine details the outer part of the dungeon.

Level 2 – Workspace covers this area.

Level 3 – Inner Shrine covers the innermost area.

Finally, Creatures has stats for mushroomfolk spirits as well as the spirit template that can be used with anything that isn’t undead.

Forgotten Shrine 01 in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with the various sections and subsections linked. The Contents covers the major sections and is hyperlinked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a variety of custom black and white, or the same with a single added colour, illustrations. Presentation is decent.

This is designed as a living dungeon, with the inhabitants reacting to what the characters do rather than just hanging around for them, and it will also change if the characters leave and return, which is good. Puzzles, though, can be difficult to handle, as so often they depend on player skill, not character skill, so this may not be for everyone. Forgotten Shrine 01 can be found by clicking here.
