Expedition to Stowerling Hold

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Expedition to Stowerling Hold

Expedition to Stowerling Hold by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with OSRIC. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 24 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

Expedition to Stowerling HoldThe opening paragraphs describe some of the history of the hold until it was eventually overrun and destroyed. They also mention stories about the hold having a holy relic.

For the Game Master gives some details on where the hold is located and that this is an adventure for 4-6 characters of 6th to 8th level.

Placement explains how the ruins could be dropped into settings.

The Ruins has a brief overview of them.

Random Encounters on the Way to the Ruins has a d10 table of encounters.

Random Encounters in the Ruins (Above Ground) has a d8 table of above ground encounters.

Random Encounters (Dungeon) has a d10 table of belowground encounters.

Key to the Ruins describes the locations. There is an above ground area and a dungeon level. There are a variety of monsters, treasures, traps and other encounters.

New Magical Items has several new items.

New Monsters has a single new monster.

The final two pages of content have maps of the ruins.

Expedition to Stowerling Hold in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. Bar the maps and covers, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This is a straightforward enough adventure. The characters head to some ruins, which could be done deliberately, looking for the relic, or because they stumbled across them in their travels, explore them and kill any foes and collect any treasure. There are, naturally, dangers. Expedition to Stowerling Hold can be found by clicking here.
