Expedition to Darkfell Keep by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Swords & Wizardry. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.
The supplement is available as a 24 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.
The opening paragraphs give some details on the ruined keep that is in the Darkfell forest and how it was sacked years ago. Recently, dangerous creatures have been seen in the area again.
For the Dungeon Master explains that this is a low-level starter adventure set in the Ravaged Realms, a setting of the author’s creation that will be released in the future.
Rumors About the Keep has six different rumours to hear, some true, some false.
Darkfell gives an overview of the forest and has a d10 table of encounters and a d6 table of things to hear.
Darkfell Keep has an overview of the keep itself and some general details, followed by descriptions of the various locations. There are surface ruins and three levels of dungeon, stocked with a standard assortment of monsters, traps, treasure and puzzles.
The final page of content has a map of the keep.
Expedition to Darkfell Keep in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. As well as the covers and map, there are a couple of full page black and white illustrations. Presentation is okay.
This is a pretty standard low-level adventure, though the actual levels it’s aimed at aren’t stated, and despite being part of an intended to be upcoming setting, it would be easy enough to drop into other settings; all that’s needed is a suitable area to site the keep in.
