Animals of the Frontiers of Space: Volume Three

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Animals of the Frontiers of Space: Volume Three

Animals of the Frontiers of Space: Volume Three by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

Animals of the Frontiers of Space: Volume ThreeThe supplement is available as a 43 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

The opening paragraphs explain that many of the worlds of the Sonora sector – the supplement is set in the Frontiers of Space – are unexplored, and many different species of animals and plants can be found. Some of these have issues with humans disregarding their rights and existence.

The Creatures takes up most of the supplement, and has details on them. Each is named, and some species come in sub-types, as well as described, number appearing and stats such as weight, damage inflicted and psionic abilities. Some of the creatures are grouped together, and there are a range of types, including some vacuum-dwellers.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and has enough creatures listed that these would have been useful. Navigation is poor. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. There are no illustrations bar the covers. Presentation is poor.

Like the previous two supplements, this adds more animals, and other creatures, to the setting, some with their origins clearly obvious. Like those clearly inspired by Godzilla and other Kaiju; those particular monsters might be harder to add to a setting, given their rather obvious inspiration, size and danger. Animals of the Frontiers of Space Volume Three is a useful supplement for adding more creatures to Cepheus Engine, though perhaps slightly less than the previous two, and it can be found by clicking here.
