Androids of the Frontiers of Space

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Androids of the Frontiers of Space

Androids of the Frontiers of Space by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, they are covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 20 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

Androids of the Frontiers of SpaceThe opening paragraphs explain that over the last few centuries in the Sonora sector – this is set in the Frontiers of Space – advances have been made in robotics, including what are known as “artificials” which are more human than robot in appearance and temperament.

Types of Artificials (Androids) Used in the Sonora Sector takes up the bulk of the supplement. The opening paragraphs explain that as artificials are so human in appearance and manner, they use human stats and skills. Each artificial has the type, Tech Level needed, price, stats, skills and a brief description, including how they are used. Some of them can have multiple TLs and price points. There are 22 androids, these being assassin, athlete, au pair, doppelganger, entertainment, exotic dancer, foreman, infiltration, informant, investigator, medical officer, pleasure (oddly only described as being available in female appearance), replacement android, replacement officer, reporter, rogue, science officer, scout, spy, teacher, terrorist and warrior.

Future Uses for Androids in the Sonora Sector looks at how they are broadly used or available; some are illegal due to having a criminal purpose.

Known Problems with Artificials looks at the problems they can have.

Androids of the Frontiers of Space in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a couple of colour full page illustrations similar to the covers. Presentation is okay.

Though this may be aimed at the Frontiers of Space, the androids are broadly useful, as they are not really tied to the setting and could be dropped into others easily enough. Some of them may need a bit of tweaking before use, thanks to some odd design choices, but the majority are fine out of the box. Androids of the Frontiers of Space is a useful little supplement and it can be found by clicking here.
