An Invitation to Dinner

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement An Invitation to Dinner

An Invitation to Dinner by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with OSRIC. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 37 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

An Invitation to DinnerGame Master Notes explains that this adventure is intended for four to seven characters of 8th to 10th level. It is set in a major town or city and the characters are invited to dinner by a rich noble; some suggestions are given as to why the characters don’t turn down the invite and end the adventure before it even starts. It gives some brief details on the noble and his manor.

Background Information for the Players explains that they are approached whilst in a tavern with an invite from the noble to attend the party.

Rumors Table has ten rumours about the noble, marked as to whether they are true or false.

Random Encounters explains to use whatever is appropriate for the city outside the manor and has several for inside.

Key to Zamu Manor details the various locations in the manor, which includes a number of curiosities, some dangerous. Incorporated in these descriptions is material related to the dinner party itself.

New Magical Items has a list of new items in the adventure.

New Monsters has a couple of new monsters.

Player Handout A has this.

The final three pages of content have maps of the manor; oddly, there is no underground level.

An Invitation to Dinner in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is poor. The text maintains a two-column format and some minor errors were noticed. There are a number of stock colour and black and white illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This dinner party will almost certainly not go smoothly, as the characters are unlikely to appreciate the kind of people in the manor. Of course, that may not be true. At some point, violence will probably happen, and this will be dangerous. The manor itself has a host of dangers inside it too. An Invitation to Dinner is a potentially dangerous adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
