Free Roleplaying Game Supplement Review: GM’s Monthly Miscellany: March 2014

GM’s Monthly Miscellany: March 2014 is a free role playing game supplement published by Raging Swan Press, primarily for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, the supplement is covered by the Open Game License and therefore some of it is considered to be Open Game Content. This is one of a regular series published eleven times a year, with the twelfth being a compilation that is also available as a print on demand softcover.

GM's Monthly Miscellany: March 2014This is a sixteen page bookmarked PDF. Three pages are Raging Swan’s standard plain front and back covers, and another, similar page, one page is the contents and front matter, one page is the Open Game License and one page is the Foreword.

GM’s Advice: 8 Tips for Beginning GMs is an article for GMs originally published on the Raging Swan site.

Riverburg At a Glance is an overview of the village of that name from Village Backdrop: Riverburg. The overview has a map of the village, some lore and rumours, a brief history and details of some NPCs and locations, as well as some standard demographics and marketplace.

Dungeon Dressings: Ceilings and Features is a d100 table taken from Dungeon Dressing: Ceilings.

So What’s The Zombie Like, Anyway?: Zombie Templates is taken from So What’s The Zombie Like, Anyway? This has six new zombie templates as well as two new zombie types. The zombies seem to be inspired more by popular culture zombies than the standard RPG cannon fodder.

From My Campaign: Pirate Town gives a brief overview of some of a pirate town from the publisher’s own campaign, giving details on four locations, some items that can be found for sale and a d20 rumour table.

Gaming Advice: 6 Ways to Help New Players is another article from the Raging Swan site, this time focusing on new players, not new GMs.

The PDF is extremely well bookmarked, given its length. The text has a two column format, and seemed to be error free. There were a few pieces of black and white stock art for illustrations, plus one that had been commissioned for an upcoming supplement.

These types of supplements are often intended to promote the publisher’s other products, but this has use in and of itself. Riverburg At a Glance provides enough details on the village that it could be used, and the Dungeon Dressing table can also be used. The new zombie templates and types can also be used without any problem. Pirate Town isn’t really useful as an entire town, but some of the locations could perhaps be dropped into a similar area. The stats are all for the Pathfinder game, and only the Dungeon Dressing table approaches being system-agnostic. GM’s Monthly Miscellany: March 2014 does have some good information in it, and it’s free, so click here to get it.
