Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: XM19 – How Cringe Stole Christmas Back

XM19 – How Cringe Stole Christmas Back by Frank Schmidt is a role playing game supplement published by Adventures in Filbar. This is a Christmas-themed one-shot adventure for two players that is aimed at Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition.

The supplement is available for free as a ten-page PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover.

The first page starts with the Player’s Background. Their town has had a prized Christmas ornament stolen by a neighbouring town; they have decided to bring it back.

XM19 – How Cringe Stole Christmas BackThe DM’s Background explains that the adventure is a twist on a well-known story – How the Grinch Stole Christmas! naturally – and that two PCs are provided.

Mission Goals is another page and explains the, fairly simple, mission, which is to recover the missing ornament whilst generally avoiding combat.

Another three and a half pages cover four location types in the town. Two, Common Residences and Businesses, cover a number of locations, a third a specific business and the fourth is the one where the ornament has been taken.

One page has player and DM’s maps of the village, half a page has two stock images relevant to the final encounter and the final two pages are the pregenerated characters.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, although not essential, these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text follows a single column format with border and appeared to be free of errors. There are, as mentioned, a couple of stock images plus the maps; having maps for both DM and players is useful. Presentation is okay.

It’s difficult to see this as working as anything other than a one-shot adventure, but that is what it’s designed to be, so this isn’t a problem. It could be expanded further, and there are mentions of doing so, but it’s designed to be run in a limited amount of time. XM19 – How Cringe Stole Christmas Back is decent small adventure and it can be downloaded for free by clicking here.
