Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: The Clan Gallien Region

The Clan Gallien Region by W R Beatty is a role playing game supplement published by Rosethrone Publishing for use with Swords & Wizardry. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 12-page PDF for free from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover, one the front matter, one the Open Game License and one is an ad.

The Clan Gallien RegionWelcome to the Rosewood Highlands explains where the region is located and its features, such as the titular rosewood tree.

A Brief History of the Rosewood Highlands is exactly what it says; a brief history of the land.

Notable Locations in the Clan Gallien Region is a gazetteer of locations, ranging from geographic features to settlements.

Newtown Capital of Clan Gallien has a black and white map of this settlement.

Adventures in the Region lists the available adventures. There are a number of locations, with the majority being in the region of The Northern Tier hex crawl that lies within Clan Gallien. There is a map of the Clan Gallien region, which has the adventuring sites labelled, then a large map of the Rosewood Highlands, that shows where the Clan Gallien region is located in the Highlands. Another map shows the Northern Tier area with the adventuring sites located.

The Clan Gallien Region in Review

The PDF has a few bookmarks, but not to any great depth. It is short enough that bookmarks are not essential. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. Artwork is colour public domain as well as the colour maps. Presentation is fine.

Though this supplement is listed as being a Swords & Wizardry supplement, there are no game stats in it, making it system neutral. What this supplement does is start expanding the area around the Northern Tier by mapping it, providing normal locations and showing where the published adventures that are not in the Northern Tier itself are located. It therefore provides a useful addition so that more adventures can be tied together. It doesn’t really stand by itself, as few locations are described in much detail, but does provide a basis for an adventure setting.
