TG21 - Harvest Colony

Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: TG21 – Harvest Colony

TG21 – Harvest Colony by Frank Schmidt is a role playing game supplement published by Adventures in Filbar for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. This is an adventure intended for four level 5 characters.

The supplement is available as a ten-page PDF for free from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover.

TG21 - Harvest ColonyPlayer’s Background explains that the characters are the security team on one ship of a supply convoy heading to a colony that was separated from the rest. The ship’s captain doesn’t know the colony’s location, only that it’s in a bay, and the cartography chamber was damaged during the storm and the maps were lost.

DM Background explains that this is a sandbox scenario designed for Thanksgiving. The only information the characters have is that the colony is located on a river in a bay. The players don’t have a map and the DM can remove superfluous points if time becomes a factor.

The remainder of the supplement describes the various points of interest that can be encountered in the bay and on the coast. Many of these are hazardous and the characters can choose where they go. A colour hex map at the back, which looks as if it was done in Inkwell IdeasHexographer, maps out the bay.

TG21 – Harvest Colony in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and has enough sections that they would have been appreciated. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. Bar the map and the cover image, there are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.

This is, for all intents and purposes, a hexcrawl, though one in which the characters spend much of their time in a ship. Characters can go to any point they wish – a blank piece of hexpaper to allow them to map their progress might be an idea – and it only has a definite start and a definite end (though characters could keep exploring after finding the colony). As is, this is perhaps best suited as a one-shot, though it could be integrated into a larger campaign. The adventure could also be expanded, with random encounters and further, or more detailed, locations, so it has the potential to make it substantially bigger. TG21 – Harvest Colony is a decent little adventure and can be downloaded for free by clicking here.
