Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: OP5 – Corsair Cove

OP5 – Corsair Cove is a free role playing game supplement published by Adventures in Filbar. This is a short adventure which is written for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition and a group of 4th level characters.

This is a simple two page adventure with the first page being the colour cover. The second page is the adventure itself.

The background to the adventure is that the players have been hired to help deal with some pirates. When the adventure starts, the players’ ship has already sunk one pirate vessel and is in pursuit of another. The players themselves are dropped off into the titular cove by the crew of their ship, but it is the players themselves who are expected to deal with the pirates on shore; this is what they have been hired to do.

OP5 - Corsair CoveThere are seven numbered locations, one of which is an encounter that happens in three different areas, in the cove and an isometric map of the area. There are several different combat locations, some of which have the potential to be dangerous.

With the PDF being only two pages long, it naturally lacks bookmarks. The text has a single column format and no errors were noticed. Barring the stock image of a ship on the front cover, the only other illustration is a map, which does the job.

The adventure itself is quite a simple one; a group of linked combat encounters, although they can be challenging. As it lacks any location details, it can easily be dropped into another setting. It could also be converted to other systems using some stock NPC stats.

If there is a downside, it’s getting to the point where the adventure actually starts. The combat with the two pirate ships is simply skipped over; a GM will need to flesh this out to some degree, or it doesn’t really work as the filler adventure it’s intended to be – players would simply be dumped into the cove with what went before being glossed over, which isn’t brilliant.

Still, with a bit of work OP5 – Corsair Cove can be used as a small side quest, and it’s free, so click here to get it.
