Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: GM’s Monthly Miscellany: February 2014

GM’s Monthly Miscellany: February 2014 is a free role playing game supplement published by Raging Swan Press intended for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, the supplement is covered by the Open Game License and some of it is considered to be Open Game Content. This is one in a series of regular monthly supplements published eleven times a year, with the twelfth edition being a compilation that is also available in print on demand softcover.

GM's Monthly Miscellany: February 2014This is a sixteen page bookmarked PDF. Three pages consist of the standard plain front cover, back cover and another similar page. One page is the Contents and front matter, one page is the Open Game License and one page is the Foreword.

Summerford At a Glance is an overview of the Summerford from Village Backdrop: Summerford. A small village which makes money from mines but has ongoing kobold troubles, this has a map of the village, details of it, notable NPCs and various locations.

Dungeon Walls: Dressings and Features is a table taken from Dungeon Dressing: Walls. This is a d100 table, although there are slightly less than 100 different results, of things that could be found on walls.

Barroom Brawls: Brawl Triggers and Barroom Brawls: Brawl Events are taken from Barroom Brawls. The first is a d20 table of different triggers for a barroom brawl and the second is a d100 table of events, although there are a lot less than 100 events on it.

From My Campaign: Unique Items is a collection of five magical items statted for Pathfinder from the publisher’s own campaign.

GM Advice: PC Rewards is an article taken from the Raging Swan site listing different types of rewards for players other than the standard gold and magic, although magic does come into it in a few cases.

The supplement is very extensively bookmarked for one of this size. The text maintains a two column format and is almost totally error free. The illustrations would appear to be stock black and white except for one that was commissioned for another product.

Summerford, despite being only an extract, can certainly be used as-is for a village. Dungeon Walls: Dressings and Features is a bit harder to use by itself; it can be done, but there are quite a number of results that would need skipping if rolled, because they refer to another table from the supplement this is taken from. The two tables from Barroom Brawls can certainly be used in any campaign. The five new magic items can always be of use, although some tweaking may need doing to fit them into another campaign, and finally, the article on PC rewards does have some good ideas.

Although this is a supplement that is intended to promote other supplements from the publisher, the majority of it is useful in and of itself. GM’s Monthly Miscellany: February 2014 is a decent collection of articles, and it’s free, so click here to get it.
