Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: FVS5 – Penchant for Adventure – 4

FVS5 – Penchant for Adventure – 4 is a free role playing game supplement published by Adventures in Filbar. This is a solo adventure in the Filbar setting, and one in a series of solo adventures located in and around the titular town of Penchant. The supplements from this publisher are aimed at variants of the Dungeons & Dragons game; from the code of this one, it is probably aimed at D&D 5th Edition.

This is a fifteen page PDF that lacks bookmarks. One page is the front cover, which has part of the town of Penchant on it, as well as a brief overview of the supplement. Around half a page has a single stock illustration and one page has two colour maps, a labelled map of the town and a labelled hex map of the local area (which would appear to have been created in Inkwell IdeasCityographer and Hexographer respectively).

FVS5 - Penchant for Adventure - 4Slightly over a page in the Player’s and DM’s Background. The character for which this solo adventure is for is assumed to have arrived in Penchant with an adventuring party. They have been having dreams regarding an item they are after (DM’s choice as to what this item it; possibly something reasonably significant), which would appear to be guarded by Orcs.

The various locations on the area map are then detailed, starting with Penchant itself. There is then a series of encounters culminating in the final confrontation with the head Orc and the discovery of the desired item.

Despite having the number “4” in its title, this is actually the second Penchant supplement released. The number actually refers to the intended level of the character, 4, but there were supplements for levels 2 and 3 released at later dates.

The layout is one column and is mostly free from errors. The description of the town of Penchant, which takes up almost five pages of the supplement, is almost completely identical – down to spelling errors – to the one in FVS4 – Penchant for Adventure – 1, which unfortunately makes it rather less useful for anyone with a copy of that, also free, supplement.

The stats provided are for D&D but they should be easily convertible to other, similar systems, and with a bit more effort to such as Pathfinder. The location itself is largely setting-neutral, so it can be dropped into most similar settings without any trouble. Overall, FVS5 – Penchant for Adventure – 4 is a decent solo adventure that can be used with a player whose character is after something specific which may not involve the rest of the party, and it’s free, so click here to download it.
