Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: FT – Port City of Kak

FT – Port City of Kak is a free role playing game supplement published by Adventures in Filbar. The city is set in the Duchy of Starryshade in the Lands of Calentria and is therefore aimed at the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition game. This is number 24 in the FT series, which primarily cover urban areas, in this case an important port city, although not the capital.

FT - Port City of KakThis is a fifteen page PDF which lacks bookmarks. The first page is the new style of cover, grey in colour denoting a free supplement. There is part of a map of Calentria on the front page (which appears to have been done in Hexographer from Inkwell Ideas), on which the city of Kak is marked. Two pages each have a map of the city (which would appear to have been done in RPG Citymap Generator), one of which is the DM’s, and therefore is labelled, the other being a player’s copy. One page has two stock images which are intended to depict parts of the city.

Around one and a third pages gives an overview of the city itself, including the harbour defences and its importance as a trading port. Around three and two thirds pages cover the locations in the city. The city is divided into different sections and the buildings have brief descriptions covering, at most, business name, name of an important non-player character at the location and the business, if appropriate, with some merely denoting what the building is.

Next is a page of descriptions of people to see in a crowd, followed by another page of 8 d12 tables for randomly rolling up NPC characteristics. Finally, there are three pages of four brief adventures, complete with statistics.

The supplement follows a one column layout and a number of mistakes were noted in the text. The illustrations are the standard stock images and do their job well enough. The city, as seems to be common with those in Calentria, is only briefly detailed, with none of the extensive fleshing out seen in some of the other FT supplements, but it does provide a start. The adventures are decent small city ones, which could be dropped into many cities without too much difficulty. The stats are presumably for D&D 5th Edition, but the adventures could be adapted to other systems.

Kak is visited during the FV series of adventures, playing a part as a destination or as a starting point in FV3 – Road to Kak, FV4 – Ziggurat of Narvi and FV5 – Xodus Isle.

Although Kak isn’t covered in as much detail as some of the other city supplements, FT – Port City of Kak is a decent start to a city, and it’s free, so click here to get it.
