Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: FC10 – Crone’s Pursuit

FC10 – Crone’s Pursuit is a free adventure published by Adventures in Filbar, intended to be played using the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition rules. The FC series of adventures are considered to be individual challenges, rather than part of a campaign, set in the world of Filbar. This particular adventure is aimed at a party of 4 to 6 characters of 1st to 3rd level.

This is a fourteen page PDF that lacks bookmarks. This is the first free supplement, and only the second overall, that has a noticeable change in appearance from the preceding ones. Rather than primarily just the Adventures in Filbar logo, the cover of this has a background similar to those of early AD&D modules, together with a hex map of part of the Filbar setting (which appears as if it was made in Inkwell IdeasHexographer) and more information on what the supplement is for. It is also the first free 5E supplement, and 5E is used more commonly from this point.

FC10 - Crone's PursuitAround one and a third pages are Player’s and DM Background; the former giving a brief player’s overview of the hamlet the adventure is based from, and a hook for the adventure itself and the latter giving some background on the task at hand. One page is a hex map of the local region, with five areas of interest marked, and one page has two, probably public domain, photographs relevant to the adventure.

The five locations are then described. The first is the hamlet of Creedo’s Trail, with four buildings – a tavern, inn, general store and chapel – briefly covered, along with the NPCs running them. There are a number of brief descriptions of other, unnamed, NPCs who can be met.

The remaining four locations are three wilderness areas, with monsters that can be encountered in them, and the lair of the crone herself, who wishes a party of adventurers to get several specific ingredients for a project she is working on, ingredients that can be found in the other locations.

This is a fairly simple hex crawl adventure that involves the party exploring until they have random encounters with the needed creatures. Stats are given for the monsters, but nothing else, including the minor magical item the players may get as a reward. With a bit of tweaking, the adventure should be usable in most D&D-derived games, not just 5E, with Old School Revival and AD&D 1st and 2nd Edition being the easiest; more complex systems such as D&D 3.x/Pathfinder will require more tweaking. This supplement sees a bit of a step up in production quality, and is a relatively easy side adventure, although some of the encounters have the potential to be too dangerous. FC10 – Crone’s Pursuit can easily be dropped into many semi-remote locations, and it’s free, so click here to get it.
