Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: Edelweiss – Short Hikes

Edelweiss – Short Hikes by Marek Golonka is a free role playing game supplement published by Skavenloft for use with Edelweiss. The supplement is covered by the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 Unported license.

The supplement is available as an 18-page PDF for free from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, two the front matter and one the Table of Contents. The PDF comes in two versions, one with the images as a lower quality to reduce the file size.

The Introduction explains that not all journeys are grand and that this contains destinations and landmarks for one-day journeys. It explains that all the places in the supplement are intended to be travelled to and returned from in a single day and that it works well with Edelweiss – Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost.

Destinations has six different places described. Each is named, given a brief description and then some suggested goals, places and events and challenges.

The Ritual of the Path is something that can be performed in order to consecrate a place; there are various suggested things that can be done to perform the Ritual.

Inspirations explains that the main inspiration for this supplement is A Short Hike, a video game, and one of the locations borrows from that. It also gives the real-world inspirations for the other locations and that the Ritual of the Path is loosely inspired by the Routes feature of Pokémon GO.

Edelweiss – Short Hikes in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with the major sections linked. The Table of Contents is to a similar level of depth and is hyperlinked. Navigation is decent. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of Public Domain colour illustrations. Presentation is decent.

This is a useful little supplement for Edelweiss that adds some new things that can be used to inspire what happens in the game. The locations aren’t described in huge detail, but enough for the type of game this is. Edelweiss – Short Hikes can be downloaded for free by clicking here.
