Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: Dipperdeep

Dipperdeep by Simon Alskans is a role playing game supplement published by Free League Publishing for use with Forbidden Lands through the Free League Workshop Community Content Programme.

The supplement is available as a 37-page PDF for free from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover, two the front matter and one the Contents.

DipperdeepDipperdeep is an adventure site for Forbidden Lands, and it is a cave. The Background explains that Dipperdeep has been used to hide the restless dead from the Rust Church. This is followed by the site’s Legend. A sidebar explains this is on a necromantic node that causes everyone who dies in the cave to become restless dead and Death Magic is enhanced. Getting Here has several adventure hooks.

Disturbing the Restless Dead has a list of activities that can disturb the undead. Each activity has different points and as these rack up the restless dead become more agitated.

The various, and somewhat unusually titled, locations with the cave are next, which are marked on a side view of the cave network, with explanations as to reading the map and how characters can dig out of the cave.

Monsters and NPCs has various named beings, including some new monsters.

Events has several things that could occur.

Artefacts has two new artefacts.

Following this are the Designer’s Notes then A Note on Names.

Five handouts for players follow next.

Finally, there is a list of restless to encounter and the disturbance activities and table listed.

Dipperdeep in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been very useful. The Contents only lists the major sections. Navigation is poor. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of error. There are a number of black and white illustrations. Presentation is decent.

This is an excellent supplement with a lot of content. There is Dipperdeep itself, a decently detailed adventure site, together with NPCs. Then there are the new monsters, which could of course be reused elsewhere, and finally the new artefacts. All combined with various rules for running the adventure site. Considering this is free, there is a lot of good content in it. Dipperdeep is an excellent, and frankly under-priced, addition for Forbidden Lands and it can be downloaded for free by clicking here.
