Free Role Playing Game Supplement Review: 12 Talens

12 Talens by Jacob Klünder is a role playing game supplement published by White Wolf for use with Werewolf: The Apocalypse through the Storytellers Vault Community Content Programme.

The supplement is available as a 12-page PDF for free from Storytellers Vault. One page is the front cover, two the front matter and one the Contents.

The Introduction explains that the author likes small, practical and not so powerful magic items that can have creative uses. Talens are one-shot Fetishes with limited applications.

Chapter 1: 12 Talens lists these.

12 TalensThe Helios Lightbulb emits a short burst of light when shattered.

Light-as-a Feather reduces the weight of an object.

The Clownfish Veil turns the appearance of someone female.

The Rune of Destruction damages whatever it is placed against.

The Black Coin afflicts the victim with bad luck.

The Barbed Dart breaks off a piece in the target and broadcasts a spiritual signal through the Umbra.

Cleasing Brew (probably should be “Cleansing”) clears the mind reducing a Mental skill roll difficulty or allowing another chance at a resistance roll.

Liquorice Root enhances the power and effectiveness of the user’s howls.

The Dancing Poppet dances and capers when activated.

Sucking Stones create water when placed in the mouth and sucked on.

Fruit of Joy alleviates dark thoughts and depression.

The user of a Blood Mark of Fortitude gains soak dice against damage.

12 Talens in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, though not essential, they would have been appreciated. The Contents is not very thorough. Navigation is poor. The text maintains a two-column format and the primary error noticed was the mentioned one in the name of a Talen. There are a number of illustrations, up to full page in size, a combination of stock and photos. Each Talen has its own illustration, which is good, though they are not great. However, illustrating every item is often difficult or expensive. Presentation is decent.

This supplement does exactly what it says it does; adds 12 new Talens with limited theoretical use that could be adapted by clever players into being useful in various situations. Moreover, it’s free, and the content is decent for the price. 12 Talens can be downloaded for free by clicking here.
