A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Yourself

Yourself by Kaden Ramstack is a role playing game published by K-Ramstack. This is a solo game based on Anamnesis and is covered by the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.

The supplement is available as a 20-page PDF from itch.io for $5 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover and one the Credits and Acknowledgements. There is also a 22-page plain text PDF, a txt file and an epub version.

YourselfYourself through Introduction explains this is a solo role playing game where the player records a story based around drawing cards and using the prompts from the included story.

Yourself through Narration explains that the player thought they were human but now knows they are a changeling, with two interpretations as to what changelings are.

Yourself through Warning is content warnings.

Yourself through Instruments explains that you need a tarot or French deck, a recording method, a d6 and a d20 if using a French deck, and it explains that the d20 is used to determine the Major Arcana if using a French deck, as well as what the tarot suits correspond to in the French deck.

Yourself through Play is the instructions. The deck is separated into suits; the Major Arcana are separated out if using a tarot deck. The top card of the Major Arcana is your human side; the bottom your fae side. These are used as inspiration. Once done, Minor Arcana are drawn and the correct prompts read, then a card from the Major Arcana to determine the meaning and you record your response. The Minor Arcana have questions or a statement to elaborate on; the Major Arcana represent your response. At the end of each Act, the Major Arcana cards drawn, except the fae and human ones, are returned to the deck. The number of Minor Arcana drawn for each Act can be a set number, or random based on rolling 1d6. Act 5 always has one card. The response is written; a single response to all Minor Arcana cards drawn, or a response for each Minor Arcana, each of which also has a Major Arcana.

Acts 1-4 then follow. These are Yourself in Reflection, which is Pentacles, Yourself in Clarity, which is Swords, Yourself in Relation, which is Cups, and Yourself in Prospect, which is Wands. Each of these has a prompt for each card value.

Act 5: Yourself in Entirety shuffles the fae and human cards back into the Major Arcana deck, the Major Arcana are fanned out face down and one drawn and a prompt answered.

Yourself in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and has enough different sections that these would have been useful. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be mostly free of errors. There are some tarot illustrations, but the main features of the design are the page backgrounds and variant text. Presentation is okay.

The variation in text sizes and colours in the regular PDF, designed to draw attention to certain game phrases, is a bit of a detriment to readability. Fortunately, there are the other versions. Other than that, this is a solo journalling game. Those that like such will probably like this; those who dislike such games are unlikely to enjoy this. Yourself can be found by clicking here.
